On Saturday 30th July QE and Nissan joined forces to show off the best-selling electric car “Leaf” at the Bicknoller Flower Show.

This outstanding eco car is all electric, produces no harmful emissions, costs just tuppence per mile to run (if you have Solar PV even less!), and does 100 miles plus without recharging.  Clearly not yet for those who want to go far (there are not yet sufficient charging points across the country); but ideal for those who would like an economical run-about, especially bearing in mind that the average daily run is 22 miles.

Recharging the battery (one can either own or lease it) is quick and can be done from a standard household plug at home or at work.

Are we still in time to save the Planet?  The grim prospect of fast melting permafrost highlighted in our last Newsletter, made it look like a losing battle.  Not so, there are many hopeful signs, three of which we cite in this issue.

Sign 1 – Electric Vehicles (EVs) will be the principal means of locomotion in the very near future.  Their global sales are rocketing, and will rocket faster as soon as battery prices drop further.

That means that air pollution (the Planet’s single biggest environmental killer:  one in eight deaths in 2012), will lose one of its major contributors, road traffic, producer of noxious chemicals and global warming greenhouse gases.
