Eco News Q3 2019

Editorial:

The Amazon Rainforest Burns:  A disaster for Humanity.

It is home to 10% of the Planet’s plants and animals; and it is the provider of 20% of the Planet’s oxygen!

What is a “Carbon Footprint”?  A carbon footprint is defined as the total amount of man-made greenhouse gases (mostly carbon dioxide, but also methane, nitrous oxide and CFCs) produced directly or indirectly by a person, organisation or product.  It is expressed in equivalent tons of CO2.  For example, each of the following activities adds one kilo of CO2 to your personal carbon footprint:

  • Flying by plane a distance of one and a half miles;
  • Producing five plastic bags, or two plastic bottles;
  • Eating 7.5 grams of beef!

Emissions & Expected Warming Based on Current Pledges & Policies

In October 2018 the IPCC Global Warming Special Report highlighted the following facts:

  • Human activities are emitting 42 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide every year.
  • At this rate the carbon budget, allowing us a 50:50 chance of keeping warming to 1.5°C, would be used up within 20 years.
  • Current pledges by world governments are not enough to limit rises to 1.5°C.
  • We need to cut global emissions by about 45% by 2030 compared with 2010 levels.

Conclusion:  A scenario which calls for all Humanity to act now.  As these projections show we will be over 2º C IPCC limit with current policies, unless we act with speed.  Please, calculate your Carbon Footprint as shown next.

What is YOUR Carbon Footprint?:  Establishing your Carbon Footprint is a first step to making a contribution to beating back Climate Change.

QE invites you to calculate your Carbon Footprint and take part in its workshop  “What YOU Can Do to Change Climate Change” (Crowcombe Village Hall on Friday 18th October.  Doors open at 6:30 for a 7 pm start).

To do so please go to https://footprint.wwf.org.uk/#/ and answer the questions posed.  It is a very user-friendly site and you will have fun doing it.

Once you have calculated your footprint, please send it in total confidence to email quantockeco@btinternet.com.

It will be used anonymously with other results for a statistical analysis of how well or badly our community is performing.  The results will be presented as a distribution chart like the one shown below.  It will be the opener at the 18th October event.  Only you will know where you are on the chart.

If you are a top performer there will be an opportunity to discuss how your result might be made even better, as well as help others by saying what you did to get such a good score.

Please take part.  Please don’t be put off by the fact that the Committee on Climate Change says we need to aim for 0.7 to 1.6 tons per person per year by 2050.  That just emphasises what huge changes in lifestyle we have to make.

Short-sighted Legislation:  HMRC will increase VAT from 5% to 20% for the installation of renewable and sustainable energy sources such as solar panels from 1st October.

Should you wish to help stop that increase, click this link to sign the petition https://petition.parliament.uk/signatures/74580681/verify?token=GGYUxDALzJO1zCNhRKT.
